THE HOMEOWNER’S WOOD CARE GUIDEFence Staining & Wood Care Guide
for DFW Homeowners.
You don’t need to become a stain expert. A few practical questions can help you understand the options and compare project scopes.
01 / LOOK & CONDITIONStart with the wood
you actually have.
Newer wood, weathered wood and previously coated wood may need different preparation. Existing coatings affect which products and finishes can be used. Ask what cleaning, stripping or repairs are included before comparing prices.
How much grain do you want to see?
A more natural appearance
Ask about transparent or semi-transparent options when keeping the wood grain visible is important. The final appearance depends on wood species, preparation and the selected product.
More color coverage
Ask about higher-opacity options when you want a more uniform appearance. Compatibility with the existing coating and the wood’s condition comes first.
Review actual product samples before selecting a color. A phone screen, lighting and different wood species can change how a finish appears.
02 / THE ESTIMATECompare the scope,
not just the total.
- Which fence sections and sides will be treated?
- What cleaning and preparation are included?
- Are repairs, stripping or vegetation clearance separate?
- Which product and application system are proposed?
- How will surrounding surfaces be protected?
- What does the final walkthrough include?
03 / TIMINGReadiness matters
more than a date.
Surface moisture, drying conditions, weather and product requirements shape the schedule. Ask how the contractor decides the wood is ready and how weather delays will be communicated.
04 / ONGOING CAREA finish worth checking.
Look for fading, uneven wear and buildup, particularly around irrigation and exposed surfaces. A periodic assessment can help identify when cleaning or maintenance staining is appropriate.
